Neither does the scholarly reconstruction of the early movements in the name of Jesus support Mark’s story and contention. The variety of movements that took their rise from Jesus tells against the view that he held any specific intentions about particular social programs. The energy and excitement in some of the movements are obvious, and that does indicate some social dimension to the effect Jesus had upon people.
